What is this test?
A shoulder CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the shoulder joint, bones, and nearby soft tissues. The low-contrast protocol refers to the imaging technique requested by your clinician.
Why might I need this test?
A CT scan may be recommended to evaluate shoulder pain, swelling, or limited movement. It can help assess fractures, bone alignment, joint abnormalities, or certain soft-tissue problems, especially when other imaging tests have not provided enough information.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table while the CT scanner rotates around the affected shoulder. You should remain still during the scan. If the ordered protocol includes intravenous contrast, a contrast injection may be used; the technologist will explain the procedure before it begins.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow the preparation instructions provided by the imaging center, particularly if intravenous contrast may be used. Remove jewelry and other metal objects from the shoulder area and tell the staff about allergies, kidney disease, or pregnancy if relevant.
Reference range
Optimal: <100 mg/dLN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
