(Serum Calcium)

Do I need to fast before the test?
Fasting is not always required for a calcium blood test. However, your doctor may ask you to fast if the test is part of a comprehensive metabolic panel that requires fasting. Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
Are there any risks with this test?
The risks are minimal and include slight pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site. In rare cases, fainting or infection may occur. The procedure is considered very safe.
What do high calcium levels mean?
High calcium levels can indicate hyperparathyroidism (overactive parathyroid glands), certain cancers, kidney disease, or excessive vitamin D or calcium supplementation. Your doctor will order additional tests to determine the cause.
What do low calcium levels mean?
Low calcium levels may indicate hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, kidney problems, pancreatitis, or low protein levels in the blood. Further testing is usually needed to identify the underlying condition.
Can I take my regular medications before the test?
Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking, as some drugs (such as diuretics, antacids, or vitamin D supplements) can affect calcium levels. Do not stop taking prescribed medications unless instructed by your doctor.
