Ultrasound of Lower Limb - Venous Doppler Item 1
This non-invasive diagnostic test uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the structure and blood flow of the veins in your lower limbs. No ionizing radiation or contrast dye is used during the 30-minute procedure, and no special preparation is required before your appointment.
This safe, 30-minute ultrasound test uses sound waves to assess lower limb vein structure and blood flow to diagnose and monitor cardiovascular conditions related to the lower body’s venous system, with no radiation, contrast dye, or special preparation needed.

What Is a Lower Limb Venous Doppler Ultrasound?
This is a specialized vascular ultrasound test that combines standard ultrasound imaging with Doppler technology to capture real-time images of your lower limb veins and measure the speed and direction of blood flow through them. The test uses only harmless high-frequency sound waves, so there is no exposure to ionizing radiation, no need for contrast dye injections, and no risk of claustrophobia during the procedure.
What to Expect During Your 30-Minute Appointment
You will lie flat on an exam table for the duration of the test, and a trained sonographer will apply a thin layer of warm, water-based gel to the skin of your lower limb(s) being evaluated. The sonographer will then move a small handheld device called a transducer over the gelled area; you may feel mild, temporary pressure from the transducer as it captures images and flow data, and you may be asked to hold your breath briefly for short periods to improve image clarity. There is no recovery time needed after the test, and you can return to all your normal activities immediately after your appointment is complete.
Cardiovascular Clinical Applications for This Test
This lower limb venous Doppler ultrasound is used to diagnose and monitor a range of cardiovascular and venous conditions, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT, or blood clots in the lower limb veins), chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) with venous reflux or backward blood flow, and unexplained leg swelling, pain, heaviness, or skin discoloration that may be related to poor venous function. It is also used to evaluate veins prior to venous procedures such as ablation, sclerotherapy, or vein grafting, to check for venous obstruction from clots, scar tissue, or external compression, and to track changes in venous health over time for patients with known chronic venous disease.
