Alternaria alternata and A. farinae IgG Antibodies — Mass Concentration
Measures Alternaria mold-specific IgG antibodies in a blood sample to assess prior exposure or sensitization to these fungi.
["Detected Alternaria-specific IgG suggests prior exposure, but it does not by itself confirm a symptomatic mold allergy."]

What is this test?
This blood test measures IgG antibodies directed against Alternaria alternata and Alternaria farinae, two closely related molds found in damp indoor and outdoor environments.
Why might I need this test?
It may be ordered to help evaluate suspected mold exposure or sensitization. Results are most useful when compared with symptoms, medical history, and other allergy testing.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is collected and analyzed in the laboratory for mold-specific IgG antibodies. The result is reported as a concentration, and the laboratory's method determines the reported units.
How do I prepare for the test?
Special preparation is usually not required. Follow the laboratory's instructions, and tell your clinician if you have a weakened immune system or take immunosuppressive medicines. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.
Reference range
Adult males: 7-56 U/L; Adult females: 7-43 U/LN/A
No special preparation required. Avoid fatty meals before the test if possible.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Detectable Alternaria-specific IgG may indicate previous exposure or sensitization to these molds. It does not establish that mold is causing your symptoms or confirm an allergy on its own. Low or undetectable IgG can occur with little exposure or in some people with impaired immune responses.
Short name
Alternaria IgG Antibodies
Frequently asked questions
What does a positive Alternaria IgG result mean?
Does a positive IgG result prove that I have a mold allergy?
Is this test the same as an Alternaria-specific IgE test?
