What is this test?
This test measures total IgE antibodies specific to Alternaria alternata, a mold that grows on damp surfaces, decaying vegetation, soil, and other organic material. The antibodies are measured in a blood sample.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test when allergy symptoms—such as sneezing, nasal congestion, wheezing, or skin symptoms—occur after exposure to mold or in an environment with suspected mold. It may also be included in a broader allergy panel.
How is the test performed?
A laboratory analyzes a blood sample using an allergy-antibody testing method to detect and quantify IgE specific to Alternaria alternata. No skin testing or deliberate exposure to the mold is required.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is generally not required. Some medicines, including antihistamines, may affect the results; tell the ordering clinician and laboratory about all medications and supplements, and do not stop prescribed medicines unless instructed.
