Alpha-2 Globulin, 24-Hour Urine — Electrophoresis, Mass Fraction
Measures the amount of alpha-2 globulin protein in a 24-hour urine collection using urine protein electrophoresis.
["This test measures alpha-2 globulin released into urine and may help evaluate protein loss or certain inflammatory conditions."]

What is this test?
Alpha-2 globulin is a group of proteins found in blood. This test measures the amount in urine, where it can appear when kidney filtering is affected or when certain proteins increase in the blood.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test as part of a 24-hour urine protein assessment, particularly if there is swelling, foamy urine, reduced urine output, or other signs of kidney or systemic disease.
How is the test performed?
You collect all urine for 24 hours in a labeled container. The laboratory then separates urine proteins by electrophoresis and measures the alpha-2 globulin fraction.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your clinician's collection instructions and record when you begin and finish the 24-hour period. The container and collection time should match those specified by the laboratory.
Reference range
Adult: 44-147 U/LN/A
No special preparation required. Avoid fatty meals before the test if possible.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
An increased urine alpha-2 globulin level may occur with increased blood levels of these proteins, including during some acute inflammatory or infection-related conditions. It may also reflect impaired kidney filtering, so results are usually interpreted alongside the other urine protein fractions and kidney function tests.

24-Hour Urine Alpha-2 Globulin
