What is this test?
This test measures the amount of alpha-2 globulin, a group of proteins, in urine collected over 24 hours. Urine electrophoresis separates proteins into fractions so that the alpha-2 globulin fraction can be measured.
Why might I need this test?
It may be ordered to evaluate the types of proteins appearing in urine, particularly when kidney disease, abnormal urine protein findings, or suspected protein loss is being investigated. It is usually interpreted with other urine protein measurements and kidney function tests.
How is the test performed?
You collect all urine for a full 24-hour period in the container provided by the laboratory. The collection is then analyzed by electrophoresis, and the amount of alpha-2 globulin is reported as a mass concentration.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow the laboratory's collection instructions carefully, including the start and end times, storage requirements, and any advice about continuing or withholding medicines. If urine is missed or the collection is shorter than instructed, ask the laboratory whether the collection should be repeated.
