What is this test?
This test uses urine protein electrophoresis to measure alpha-2 globulin, a group of proteins, in a 24-hour urine collection. It estimates the amount of this protein fraction leaving the body each day.
Why might I need this test?
It may be ordered as part of a urine protein evaluation to help assess kidney function or identify unusual patterns of protein excretion. It is generally interpreted alongside the rest of the urine protein electrophoresis and other clinical findings.
How is the test performed?
You collect urine for a full 24 hours according to the laboratory’s instructions. The laboratory separates urine proteins by electrophoresis and calculates the alpha-2 globulin amount using the measured urine volume and concentration.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow the laboratory’s 24-hour collection instructions carefully, including the start and end times and whether the container should be refrigerated. Record the total urine volume and bring the collection container to the laboratory as directed.
Reference range
Adult: 44-147 U/LN/A
No special preparation required. Avoid fatty meals before the test if possible.
