Alpha-2 Globulin, Serum — Electrophoresis, Mass Fraction
Measures the relative amount of alpha-2 globulin in serum using electrophoresis to help evaluate protein abnormalities and certain liver, kidney, or inflammatory conditions.

What is this test?
This blood test uses serum protein electrophoresis to determine the proportion, or mass fraction, of alpha-2 globulin among your blood proteins. It is usually interpreted along with the other protein fractions, such as albumin and the alpha-1, beta, and gamma fractions.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test as part of an evaluation of an abnormal protein pattern, unexplained changes in protein levels, or suspected liver, kidney, inflammatory, or immune-related conditions. The result is most useful when compared with the rest of the electrophoresis panel and your medical history.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is taken, and the serum is separated and analyzed by electrophoresis. The laboratory measures the relative amount of alpha-2 globulin compared with the other separated protein fractions. This is a protein-fraction measurement, not a stand-alone diagnosis.
How do I prepare for the test?
No special preparation is usually required for this test unless your clinician gives different instructions. Follow any fasting or medication guidance provided for the broader laboratory evaluation, and tell the laboratory if you have recently received certain treatments, such as plasma products or immunoglobulin therapy.
