What is this test?

The beta globulin test measures the amount of beta globulin proteins in your urine. Beta globulins are proteins found in blood that serve important functions, including fighting infections (antibodies), transporting nutrients, and helping blood clot. When your kidneys are healthy, they filter waste from your blood while keeping important proteins like beta globulins in your bloodstream. If your kidneys are damaged, these proteins may leak into your urine.

Why is a 24-hour collection needed?

A 24-hour urine collection is more accurate than a single urine sample because the amount of protein in urine can vary throughout the day due to activity, diet, and other factors. Collecting all urine over 24 hours gives your healthcare provider a complete picture of how much beta globulin your kidneys are filtering over a typical day.

How is the test performed?

You will receive a special container from your healthcare provider or laboratory. On the day of collection, you will start by urinating into the toilet at a specific time (usually morning). After that, every time you urinate for the next 24 hours, you will collect the urine in the provided container. Keep the container refrigerated or in a cool place. At the end of 24 hours, return the container to the laboratory as instructed.

What do the results mean?

Normal results typically show very little to no beta globulin in urine. Elevated levels may indicate kidney damage or disease. However, your healthcare provider will interpret your results together with other tests and your overall health condition to determine what the results mean for you specifically.

Reference range

Beta globulin in 24-hour urine typically represents a small fraction of total urine protein. Reference values vary by laboratory but generally less than 1-3 mg/24 hours or less than 10% of total urine protein.N/A

Specimen: urine

No special preparation required. Patient should maintain normal hydration and usual dietary pattern during the 24-hour collection period. Avoid excessive exercise prior to and during collection.
