Bilirubin, Urine — Automated Test Strip, Substance Concentration
A urine test strip measures bilirubin in the urine. It is commonly included in a urinalysis to help evaluate liver function and bile drainage.
["Detectable urine bilirubin may indicate impaired bile drainage or liver injury, but results must be interpreted with the rest of your urinalysis."]

What is this test?
This test checks for bilirubin in your urine using an automated reagent strip. Bilirubin is a yellow breakdown product made when the liver processes old red blood cells.
Why might I need this test?
Urine bilirubin is often measured as part of a routine urinalysis or when symptoms suggest liver or bile duct disease. Your doctor may also order it to monitor an existing liver condition.
How is the test performed?
You provide a urine sample in a sterile container. The laboratory places a reagent strip into the sample, and an automated analyzer reads the strip to determine the amount of bilirubin detected.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your doctor's instructions about when to collect the sample. A clean-catch, midstream urine sample is usually preferred, and the sample should be tested as soon as possible.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Detectable urine bilirubin can occur when conjugated bilirubin enters the urine, which may suggest liver inflammation or injury or an obstruction of the bile ducts. An abnormal result can also reflect medications, fasting, or other temporary changes and should be interpreted alongside symptoms and other laboratory tests.
Short name
Urine bilirubin
