What is this test?
This test examines a urine sample for bilirubin crystals. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when the body breaks down red blood cells and is normally processed by the liver.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be ordered if another urine test shows unusually high bilirubin, or if a clinician is evaluating liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or other causes of increased bilirubin.
How is the test performed?
A urine sample is collected and examined under a microscope to identify the characteristic appearance of bilirubin crystals. The result is reported as present or absent.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your clinician's instructions for collecting the urine sample, often using a clean-catch midstream sample. Tell the laboratory if you are taking medicines or have recently had antibiotics, as these may affect urine findings.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Bilirubin crystals may be found when the amount of bilirubin in the urine is greatly increased. This can occur with liver injury, impaired bile flow or bile duct obstruction, and certain blood disorders. The finding should be interpreted with the rest of your liver and urine test results.
Short name
Urine bilirubin crystals
