What is this test?
This test checks for IgE antibodies directed against cauliflower proteins. It uses a basophil-based laboratory assay to determine whether your immune system reacts to cauliflower.
Why might I need this test?
It may be considered if you have hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or other symptoms associated with eating cauliflower. The result can help your clinician evaluate a possible food allergy.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is collected and examined in the laboratory using cauliflower allergen in a basophil-bound antibody assay. The result is reported as positive or negative.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is usually not required, but follow the laboratory's instructions. Tell your clinician about antihistamines or other medicines because some allergy tests can be affected by them; do not stop prescribed medicines unless advised.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
A positive result indicates immune sensitization to cauliflower, but it does not by itself prove that eating cauliflower causes symptoms. A negative result makes an immediate IgE-mediated allergy less likely but does not exclude every form of food reaction. Results should be reviewed with your symptoms, exposure history, and other allergy testing.
