What is this test?
Cerebrospinal fluid cholesterol test measures the concentration of cholesterol in the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is not the same as a routine blood cholesterol test.
Why might I need this test?
A clinician may order this test as part of an evaluation of an unexplained neurologic condition or when examining cerebrospinal fluid for signs of infection, inflammation, or other disease. It is usually interpreted with other CSF measurements and clinical findings.
How is the test performed?
Cerebrospinal fluid is usually collected through a lumbar puncture, or spinal tap. The fluid is analyzed in a laboratory to determine its cholesterol concentration.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is generally not required, but follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, or a history of spinal or back conditions before a lumbar puncture.
