What is this test?
Computed tomography angiography, or CTA, uses multiple X-ray images to examine blood vessels in the chest. The version named here is performed without iodinated intravenous contrast.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be ordered to evaluate the aorta and other chest vessels, investigate symptoms such as chest or back pain, or monitor a known vascular condition. A radiologist will also review the lungs and nearby structures visible on the images.
How is the test performed?
You lie on a CT table while the scanner rotates around you. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly so the images are clear. No iodinated contrast is injected for the version specified in the test name, and a radiologist interprets the images.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is usually not required, but follow the imaging center's instructions. Tell the staff if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have kidney problems. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless your clinician tells you to do so.
