What is this test?

A chest CT uses X-rays taken from different angles to create detailed pictures of the lungs, airways, heart, blood vessels, ribs, and other structures in the chest. A 3D reconstruction combines the images into views that can help assess complex anatomy.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to investigate unexplained chest symptoms, an abnormal chest X-ray, or findings on another scan. It may be used to evaluate lung disease, chest injuries, masses, or the anatomy of the heart and major blood vessels.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves through the CT scanner while X-ray images are collected. The scan is generally painless, and the 3D images are created afterward from the recorded data. This version is performed without intravenous contrast.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the instructions provided by the imaging facility. Because no intravenous contrast is used, fasting may not be necessary, but tell the care team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant and inform them of any medical conditions, devices, or allergies that could affect the scan.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a standard chest CT?
It is a chest CT that includes a 3D reconstruction of the images. The reconstruction provides additional views of the chest and does not represent a separate X-ray examination.
Will I receive contrast dye?
This test is identified as being performed without contrast, so no intravenous contrast dye is typically given. Confirm with the imaging facility if you were also instructed to receive oral or IV contrast.
Is the CT scan painful?
The scan itself is usually painless, although you must remain still inside the scanner. Some people feel anxious in the enclosed space, so tell the technologist if you have claustrophobia or another concern.
