What is this test?
Computed tomography, or CT, uses X-ray technology and a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images. This scan examines the right extremity, which may be the arm, shoulder, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, or foot, depending on the exact area ordered.
Why might I need this test?
A CT scan may be used to evaluate an injury, such as a fracture, or to assess an infection, abnormal bone growth, foreign body, tumor, or another problem involving a joint or soft tissue.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table while a CT scanner rotates around the area being examined. The scan is generally painless and usually takes less than 30 minutes. Because this test is specified without contrast, no intravenous contrast dye is needed.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is usually not required for a CT scan without contrast. Remove metal objects and jewelry from the area being scanned, and tell the technologist if you might be pregnant, have a contrast allergy, or have any implanted medical devices.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may indicate a fracture, joint injury, infection, foreign body, abnormal bone growth, or a mass involving bone or soft tissue. The radiologist interprets the images and sends the results to your ordering clinician. Your clinician will explain how any findings relate to your symptoms and determine the next steps.
