What is this test?

A CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the face and neck. This version is performed without intravenous iodinated contrast.

Why might I need this test?

The scan may be ordered to evaluate facial or neck pain, swelling, trauma, suspected infection, inflammation, a mass, or changes in nearby bones and soft tissues. It may also help guide treatment or further testing.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves through a CT scanner. X-ray images are taken from several angles and combined into cross-sectional pictures. The scan is generally painless and usually takes only a few minutes.

How do I prepare for the test?

Remove metal objects, jewelry, and removable hearing aids before the scan if instructed. Tell the imaging team about allergies, prior contrast reactions, pregnancy possibilities, and implanted medical devices, and follow any facility-specific instructions about eating or drinking.

Frequently asked questions

Does this CT scan use contrast?
The test title indicates that no IV contrast is used. Oral contrast or other agents may occasionally be included, so confirm the instructions with the imaging facility.
Is a CT scan of the face and neck painful?
The scan itself is usually painless. You may be asked to remain very still, and the scanner can feel tight or uncomfortable, particularly if you experience anxiety in enclosed spaces.
How soon will the results be available?
A radiologist typically interprets the images and sends a report to your ordering healthcare professional. The timing for discussion of the results varies by the care setting and the urgency of the examination.
