What is this test?

A face CT is an imaging test that uses X-rays and a computer to create cross-sectional pictures of the face, skull, nasal sinuses, jaw, and nearby soft tissues. It is performed without iodinated contrast material.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to assess facial trauma, suspected fractures, sinus problems, infection, inflammation, dental or jaw abnormalities, or a mass. It may also help guide treatment or determine the cause of facial pain, swelling, or changes in facial structure.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a padded table while a CT scanner directs X-rays around your head and face. The images usually take only a few minutes, and a radiologist will review them and send a report to your clinician.

How do I prepare for the test?

Fasting is generally not required. Remove jewelry, glasses, hair ornaments, and other metal objects near your head when instructed. Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, and let them know about any relevant facial or dental implants.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

Abnormal findings may indicate a facial or jaw fracture, sinus disease, infection, inflammation, cyst, or another mass. CT can also reveal the location and extent of an injury or lesion, which may help your clinician choose treatment. The findings should be interpreted together with your symptoms, physical examination, and other tests.

Frequently asked questions

Does this CT scan use contrast material?
No. This test is performed without iodinated contrast material, so there is generally no need for an IV line or contrast-related preparation.
Is a face CT scan painful?
The scan itself is usually painless. You may feel mild pressure from the body of the scanner, but the X-ray images are not painful and do not involve an injection.
How much radiation will I receive?
A CT scan uses ionizing radiation, and the amount depends on the specific scan and equipment used. Your imaging center can provide information about the dose used for your examination.
