What is this test?

A CT-guided biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure in which CT images help the clinician locate the target area and guide a needle to collect tissue. The samples are examined under a microscope to identify conditions such as cancer, infection, or inflammation.

Why might I need this test?

This test may be recommended when an abnormal area needs a tissue diagnosis or when the cause of a lesion cannot be determined from imaging alone. It can help guide treatment decisions and may provide information that a blood test or scan cannot.

How is the test performed?

After numbing the skin with local anesthetic, the patient is positioned so the target can be reached safely. CT imaging is used to monitor needle placement, and one or more tissue samples are collected for pathology review. A small bandage is usually placed over the biopsy site.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the facility's specific instructions, including whether to stop blood thinners or other medicines and whether to fast. Tell the care team about medication allergies, iodine or contrast allergies, pregnancy possibility, bleeding disorders, and any prior problems with sedation.

Frequently asked questions

Does this biopsy use contrast material?
The name indicates that iodinated contrast is not used for the procedure. Local anesthetic is used to numb the biopsy site, and CT is used only for imaging guidance.
Will I need to stay afterward?
You will usually be observed briefly for bleeding, pain, or other effects of the procedure. The exact recovery time and whether you need someone to drive you home depend on the care setting and any sedation used.
When will the biopsy results be available?
Timing varies with the type of tissue and the tests required. Your clinician will explain when pathology results are expected and how you will receive them.
