What is this test?

A CT-guided chest biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a needle is directed into a suspicious area in the chest using CT images. The collected tissue is examined by a pathologist to identify disease.

Why might I need this test?

This test may be recommended when a lung or other chest lesion cannot be identified confidently from imaging alone. It can help diagnose conditions such as infection, inflammation, or cancer.

How is the test performed?

After local numbing medication is given, a biopsy needle is inserted through the skin and advanced to the target under CT guidance. Several small tissue samples may be removed, and the needle is then withdrawn. The samples are sent to a laboratory for pathologic examination.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the instructions provided by the procedure team, including any medication changes. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy, or previous reactions to numbing medication. You may need to fast for a period and should arrange transportation if sedation is planned.

Frequently asked questions

Does this procedure use contrast material?
No. The test is performed without iodinated contrast, although CT images are used to guide the needle.
Is a CT-guided chest biopsy painful?
Most patients feel pressure or a brief needle pinch rather than sharp pain because local numbing medication is used. Sedation may be offered depending on the procedure and the patient's condition.
When will I receive the biopsy results?
Timing varies because some samples need special stains or additional tests. The care team will explain when results are expected and will contact you when they are available.
