What is this test?
A hand CT without contrast is a computed tomography scan that produces detailed cross-sectional images of the hand and wrist. It can show the bones, joints, and surrounding soft tissues more clearly than a standard X-ray.
Why might I need this test?
A hand CT may be ordered to assess fractures that are difficult to see on standard X-rays, particularly when the injury involves the wrist, joint surfaces, or complex bone shapes. It may also help evaluate bone lesions, infection, arthritis, or alignment problems.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a scanning table while an X-ray machine rotates around your hand, which is usually positioned in or near the scanner. The scan is generally painless and provides images that a radiologist reviews for abnormalities.
How do I prepare for the test?
No special preparation is usually needed for a CT scan without contrast. Remove jewelry, rings, watches, and other metal items from the hand and wrist, and tell the care team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant before the scan.
