What is this test?

A head and neck CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images of the bones, brain, sinuses, soft tissues, and nearby blood vessels. In this test, no intravenous contrast dye is used.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this scan to evaluate head or neck injuries, infection, inflammation, abnormal growths, sinus problems, or changes in the brain. It may also be used to guide further testing or treatment.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves through a CT scanner while X-ray images are taken. The scan is generally painless and usually takes only a few minutes, although the exact time depends on the area being examined.

How do I prepare for the test?

Usually, no special preparation is needed for a CT scan without contrast. Wear comfortable clothing without metal, remove jewelry and other metal objects, and tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

No. “Without contrast” means no intravenous contrast dye is injected for this examination. A different order may be needed if contrast-enhanced images are required.
Is a head and neck CT scan painful?
The scan itself is generally painless. Some people feel confined in the scanner, and the X-ray machine may make clicking or humming sounds.
How soon will I receive the results?
A radiologist will review and interpret the images, usually within a timeframe determined by the facility and the urgency of the examination. Your ordering clinician will discuss the findings with you.
