What is this test?

A head and sinus CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed pictures of the skull, brain, and sinus cavities. This test is performed without injected contrast dye.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to evaluate a head injury, severe or persistent headache, sinus symptoms, facial swelling, suspected infection, fractures, or an abnormal growth. It can also help assess the brain when a detailed image is needed.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves through a large X-ray scanner. The scan is painless and usually takes a few minutes. You may be asked to remain still and avoid moving during the images.

How do I prepare for the test?

Fasting is generally not required for a scan without contrast. Remove glasses, jewelry, hair accessories, and other metal items near the scanned area. Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, have mobility limitations, or have had a serious reaction to contrast dye previously.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

Abnormal findings may include sinus inflammation, fluid collection, bone fractures, or a mass. Head CT may also show bleeding, swelling, or other changes involving the brain. Your clinician will interpret the images in the context of your symptoms, examination, and other tests.

Short name

Head and sinus CT without contrast

Frequently asked questions

Does this test use contrast dye?
No. “Without contrast” means no contrast dye is injected for this scan. If a separate contrast-enhanced CT is needed, your clinician will explain it beforehand.
Is a head and sinus CT painful?
The scan itself is painless, although the scanner can feel confined and may be noisy. The test usually does not involve needles or injected dye.
How soon will I receive the results?
A radiologist typically interprets the images and sends a report to your ordering clinician. Your clinician should explain the findings and recommended next steps.
