What is this test?
A knee CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images of the bones, joints, and nearby soft tissues. The “without contrast” designation means that contrast dye is not injected for the scan.
Why might I need this test?
A CT scan may be recommended for persistent knee pain or swelling, a suspected complex fracture, evaluation after an injury, or when the cause of joint symptoms is not clear from an examination or standard X-ray.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table while a CT scanner rotates around the affected knee. The scan is generally painless and usually takes only a short time, although you may be asked to remain still or hold your leg in a specific position.
How do I prepare for the test?
No special preparation is usually required for a CT scan without contrast. Wear comfortable clothing without metal near the knee, remove jewelry if requested, and tell the imaging staff if you are or might be pregnant.
