What is this test?

A liver CT scan is an imaging test that uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed pictures of the liver. In this version, contrast dye is not injected.

Why might I need this test?

A CT scan may be ordered to investigate unexplained abdominal pain, examine an abnormality found during another exam, or assess the liver after an injury. It can also help evaluate the size, shape, and appearance of the liver and nearby structures.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves through a doughnut-shaped X-ray scanner. The scanner takes pictures from several angles, and a computer creates detailed images for a radiologist to review.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the instructions provided by the imaging center. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a short period, remove metal objects, and change into a gown. Tell the care team if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have had a reaction to contrast dye.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

The scan may reveal changes in liver size or structure, cysts, fluid collections, calcifications, or a possible mass. These findings can have many causes and must be interpreted with your symptoms, medical history, examination, and other tests. A radiologist will provide the results to your ordering clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test use contrast dye?
No. This version of the CT scan is performed without injected contrast dye.
Is a liver CT scan painful?
The scan itself is generally painless. Some people may feel brief discomfort from the pressure of the scanner or from lying still on the table.
How soon will I receive the results?
A radiologist will review the images and send a report to your ordering clinician. The timing of the final explanation may vary, so ask your care team when to expect the results.
