What is this test?
A parotid gland CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create cross-sectional images of the parotid gland, which is located in front of each ear and helps produce saliva. It is performed without intravenous contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be recommended to investigate a lump, persistent swelling, pain, inflammation, infection, or blockage of a salivary duct. It can also help characterize a finding seen during a physical examination or another imaging study.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a table while a CT scanner directs X-rays around your head and neck. The images are usually completed quickly, and a radiologist interprets them and sends the report to your healthcare professional.
How do I prepare for the test?
No contrast dye is used, so there is generally no special preparation or fasting requirement. Follow any instructions from the imaging center, remove metal items near the scanned area, and tell the staff if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have mobility or breathing concerns.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may include a mass, inflammation, infection, fluid collection, or obstruction of the salivary duct. The scan can help show the size and location of a finding and whether nearby tissues are involved, but the results are interpreted together with your symptoms, examination, and other tests.
