What is this test?
CT pelvimetry is a focused X-ray-based CT examination of the bony pelvis. It measures the dimensions of the pelvic inlet, midpelvis, and outlet to help clinicians assess whether a baby can pass through the birth canal.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be used during pregnancy when there is concern about a mismatch between the baby's size and the size of the mother's pelvis, or when delivery planning is difficult. It may also provide information about pelvic anatomy that cannot be measured adequately during a routine physical examination.
How is the test performed?
You lie on a CT table while the scanner takes X-ray images from several angles. The technologist may ask you to remain still and may position you differently to obtain the required measurements. Intravenous contrast is not used.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow the facility's instructions because special preparation may be required for pelvic imaging. Remove jewelry, belts, and other metal objects before the scan and tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant. Fasting is not always required, but bowel preparation or oral contrast may be ordered in some cases.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Pelvic measurements may help identify a narrowed pelvis or a mismatch between the pelvic dimensions and the baby's estimated size. Such findings can influence the recommended delivery method, including the possible need for cesarean delivery. Because this is a limited examination, other pelvic conditions may require additional imaging.
