What is this test?
A noncontrast CT (computed tomography) scan creates detailed cross-sectional images of the pelvic bones, organs, and nearby soft tissues. It does not use iodinated contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test to evaluate unexplained pelvic pain, injury, infection, a mass, or problems involving the pelvic bones and urinary tract. It may also help guide further testing or treatment.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a table that moves through a CT scanner while X-ray images are taken. The scan is generally painless and usually takes a short amount of time, although the total visit may be longer.
How do I prepare for the test?
Because no contrast dye is used, there are usually no contrast-related restrictions. Follow your appointment instructions, tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, and let them know about any mobility limitations or metal in your body.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may include fractures, signs of infection or inflammation, a mass, fluid collection, or changes involving pelvic organs. Findings should be interpreted by your clinician in the context of your symptoms, examination, and other tests because some abnormalities can have several possible causes.
Short name
Noncontrast CT Pelvis
