What is this test?
This is a limited computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinuses, the air-filled spaces around the nose. It creates detailed X-ray images to assess the sinus cavities and nearby structures without injected contrast.
Why might I need this test?
A sinus CT may be ordered for persistent or severe sinus symptoms, such as congestion, facial pain, headache, or thick nasal discharge. It can also help evaluate suspected inflammation, infection, nasal polyps, or sinus blockage when an initial examination is not sufficient.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a CT table while the scanner rotates around your head. The scan is usually brief, and the technologist may ask you to remain still and avoid swallowing during image capture.
How do I prepare for the test?
No fasting or blood draw is generally required. Remove items that contain metal, including jewelry, hairpins, and removable dental appliances, if instructed; tell the care team if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have a contrast allergy.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may indicate sinus inflammation, infection, fluid or mucus buildup, polyps, narrowing, or another structural problem. The radiologist interprets the images along with your symptoms and examination, so results should be discussed with your clinician.
Short name
Limited sinus CT
