## What is this test?

A sinus CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed pictures of the air-filled spaces around the nose, including the frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, and maxillary sinuses. It is performed without injected contrast dye.

## Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this scan to investigate persistent or severe sinus symptoms, facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, headaches, or suspected sinus infection. It may also be used to assess polyps, fluid buildup, structural abnormalities, or complications and to guide treatment or surgery.

## How is the test performed?

You will lie on a CT table with your head held still while the scanner takes X-ray images from several angles. The procedure is generally painless and usually takes only a few minutes, although the total visit may take longer.

## How do I prepare for the test?

No fasting or special preparation is usually required. Remove glasses, jewelry, hairpins, and other metal objects near your head as instructed. Tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or have had a serious allergic reaction to contrast dye, even though this scan is performed without contrast.

## Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

Abnormal findings may include sinus mucosal swelling, fluid levels, thickened walls, polyps, or changes in nearby bone, which can be associated with inflammation, infection, allergies, or chronic sinus disease. CT images are interpreted together with your symptoms, examination, and other test results, and your clinician will explain what the findings mean for you.

## Short name

Sinus CT without contrast

## Frequently asked questions
Is a sinus CT scan the same as a routine head CT?No. A sinus CT focuses on the paranasal sinus cavities and nearby facial structures, while a routine head CT covers a broader area of the head and brain.Does this CT scan use contrast dye?No. The test is performed without injected contrast, so an IV line and contrast-related reactions are generally not concerns. Will the scan show what is causing my sinus symptoms? It can show structural or inflammatory changes in the sinuses, such as fluid, polyps, or swelling. Your clinician will combine the imaging findings with your history and examination to determine the likely cause.
