What is this test?
A CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed pictures of the spleen and nearby abdominal structures. This is an imaging test rather than a blood or urine laboratory test, and it is performed without injected contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this scan to investigate unexplained abdominal pain, an enlarged spleen, spleen injury, or a suspected lump or cyst. It may also be used to follow a known spleen condition or check how a liver or blood-flow problem is affecting the spleen.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table while a CT scanner rotates around you and takes X-ray images. The scan is usually brief, and a technologist will explain the process and help you remain still. No contrast dye is injected for this version of the study.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your clinician's instructions, including any fasting or medication guidance. Tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, and if you have kidney disease, allergies, or any recent surgery. Remove metal objects and change into a gown if requested.
