What is this test?

A temporal bone CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to produce detailed images of the bones that make up the ear and the surrounding base of the skull. It can assess the ear canal, middle-ear and inner-ear structures, and nearby bone.

Why might I need this test?

This scan may be recommended for hearing loss, ear pain, drainage, trauma, suspected infection, or a bony growth or other structural abnormality. It is also used to evaluate the anatomy before ear surgery or cochlear implant placement.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a CT table with your head positioned so the scanner can capture very thin images of the temporal bones. The scan is quick and generally painless, although you must remain still and may be asked to hold your breath briefly.

How do I prepare for the test?

No special preparation is usually required for a CT scan without contrast. Remove metal objects, hearing aids, and removable dental items if instructed, and tell the technologist if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have had a serious reaction to iodinated contrast.

Frequently asked questions

Does this CT scan use contrast?
No. “Without contrast” means iodinated contrast dye is not used, so there is usually no need for contrast-related precautions or a contrast injection.
Is a temporal bone CT scan the same as a routine head CT?
No. A temporal bone CT uses focused, very detailed images of the ear bones and nearby structures. It is not a substitute for a routine head CT when evaluating the brain.
Will the scan show my hearing?
It shows the anatomy of the ear and nearby bones but does not directly measure hearing. A hearing test, such as audiometry, is usually needed to assess hearing function.
