What is this test?
A thumb CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create cross-sectional images of the thumb. It can show the bones, joints, tendons, and other surrounding tissues in greater detail than a standard X-ray.
Why might I need this test?
A thumb CT may be ordered to evaluate a fracture that is difficult to see on a regular X-ray, persistent pain or swelling, joint problems, or a suspected injury involving the bone, tendons, or soft tissues.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on the CT table while the scanner rotates around your thumb. The scan is usually painless and takes only a short time, although you may be asked to remain very still. A radiologist will review the images and send the report to your clinician.
How do I prepare for the test?
Tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Remove jewelry, metal objects, and loose items from the hand or wrist when instructed. Because no IV contrast is used, fasting is generally not required unless your clinician provides different instructions.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
The scan may identify or clarify a fracture, joint injury, bone change, tendon problem, or other structural abnormality in the thumb. Results are interpreted together with your symptoms, physical examination, and any other imaging tests. Your clinician will explain the findings and discuss whether treatment or additional testing is needed.
