What is this test?

A CT scan of the upper arm uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images of the arm. This version is performed without an injected contrast dye.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to evaluate an injury, persistent pain, swelling, or reduced movement. It can also help assess bone fractures, soft-tissue masses, infection, or other structural abnormalities.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table while a CT scanner rotates around the affected arm. The scan is quick and generally painless, although the scanner may make loud clicking or buzzing sounds.

How do I prepare for the test?

Tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant and inform them of any medical devices, such as a joint replacement, in the area being scanned. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and follow any instructions provided by your clinician.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

The scan may show a fracture, bone lesion, muscle or fat abnormality, fluid collection, infection, or a soft-tissue mass. Findings should be interpreted by a radiologist in the context of your symptoms, examination, and other tests. Your healthcare professional will explain the results and discuss any follow-up needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does this CT scan use contrast dye?
No. The words “without contrast” mean no injected contrast dye is used. Some CT studies may still use oral contrast, so confirm the instructions with the imaging center beforehand.
Is a CT scan of the upper arm painful?
The scan itself is not painful. You may be asked to hold still, and the scanner can be somewhat noisy or feel confined, but the imaging procedure is usually brief.
What can the scan detect?
CT imaging can show fractures and abnormalities involving bones, muscles, fat, and other soft tissues. It may also identify masses, fluid collections, or signs of infection.
