What is this test?

This was a qualitative blood test designed to detect IgG antibodies directed against cinnamon. The term RAST refers to a radioallergosorbent testing method, and this test is now considered deprecated.

Why might I need this test?

It may have been used to investigate a suspected food-related immune response to cinnamon. Food-specific IgG testing is generally not recommended for diagnosing allergy because IgG can occur without symptoms and is not the antibody type that usually drives immediate food allergy.

How is the test performed?

In its historical form, the test measured serum using a RAST-style laboratory method and reported antibodies as present or absent. Because the assay is deprecated, it is not routinely available and may be unavailable for clinical use.

How do I prepare for the test?

No special preparation can be given for a test that is no longer routinely offered. If an alternative test is recommended, follow your clinician's instructions and tell the laboratory about any food reactions, medication use, and recent symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive cinnamon IgG RAST mean I am allergic to cinnamon?
No. Cinnamon-specific IgG can occur in people without allergy, so this result alone does not confirm that cinnamon causes symptoms.
Is the cinnamon IgG RAST test still available?
The test is considered deprecated and is not routinely offered. A clinician can recommend current allergy evaluation or testing when appropriate.
What should I do if I have symptoms after eating cinnamon?
Discuss the reaction with your clinician or an allergist, especially if it includes hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or other concerning symptoms. Keep a record of the foods, symptoms, and timing of the reaction.
