What is this test?
This is a qualitative blood test that looks for allergen-specific IgE antibodies to eggplant. IgE is an immune-system protein that can be produced after exposure to a food allergen.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be considered when someone has symptoms suggestive of an eggplant allergy, such as hives, swelling, abdominal discomfort, or breathing difficulty after eating eggplant. The results are interpreted together with the reported reaction history and other allergy evaluations.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is analyzed using an allergen-specific antibody assay. The report indicates whether antibodies to eggplant were detected or not detected, subject to the laboratory's testing method and reporting criteria.
How do I prepare for the test?
No special preparation is usually required for this type of blood test. Tell your clinician about the exact symptoms, timing, and foods eaten before the reaction, and do not change a medically necessary food-avoidance plan without medical advice.
Reference range
Adult: 10-40 U/LN/A
