Why It’s Done
Your doctor may order this test if you have symptoms of kidney problems, such as swelling, frequent urination, or fatigue. It’s also used to check kidney function before certain surgeries, treatments, or if you have conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that can affect kidneys.
How It Works
A blood sample is taken to measure creatinine levels. A 24-hour urine sample is collected to measure creatinine and urine volume. The test calculates how much creatinine is filtered out of your blood over time.
Sample Collection
You’ll need to collect all urine for a full 24-hour period (from one morning to the next morning). Your doctor or lab technician will provide instructions. A simple blood draw is also required on the same day.
Potential Side Effects
Most people experience mild discomfort from the blood draw. Collecting urine over 24 hours may require reminders to stay hydrated and empty your bladder completely at scheduled times.
Clinical interpretation
