What is this test?
A heel CT is an imaging test that uses X-rays and a computer to create cross-sectional images of the heel. It can show the heel bone, nearby joints, and surrounding soft tissues in greater detail than a standard X-ray.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be used to evaluate a suspected heel fracture, identify bone lesions, assess infection or inflammation, or examine an injury that is not clearly visible on standard X-rays. It may also help guide treatment decisions.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a scanning table while a CT machine directs X-rays around your heel. The scan is generally painless and usually takes only a few minutes, although the entire visit may take longer.
How do I prepare for the test?
No contrast dye is used, so there is usually no special preparation. Wear comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects near the scanned area. Tell the imaging staff if you are pregnant, have recently received contrast dye, or have another relevant medical condition.
