Mitral Valve Doppler Peak Velocity — Echocardiography (Deprecated)
A Doppler ultrasound measurement of blood-flow speed through the mitral valve, used to help evaluate valve function and blood flow.

What is this test?
This is a Doppler echocardiography measurement of the peak blood-flow velocity through the mitral valve, which connects the left atrium to the left ventricle. It may also be part of a larger examination of the heart's valves and pumping function.
Why might I need this test?
A clinician may order it to evaluate a heart murmur, suspected mitral valve narrowing or leakage, or symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling. It may also be used to assess blood flow in people with known heart conditions.
How is the test performed?
A technician uses an ultrasound probe and Doppler technology to record blood flow through the mitral valve. The test is generally painless and does not involve needles or radiation.
How do I prepare for the test?
No fasting or special preparation is usually required. Follow any instructions from your clinician, particularly if the test is part of a broader heart evaluation, and tell the technician if you have recently had an echocardiogram.
