What is this test?

PEAR stands for perennial aeroallergen. This qualitative RAST test looks for allergen-specific IgG antibodies associated with common perennial allergens, such as dust mites, animal dander, and molds.

Why might I need this test?

This legacy test may have been used to assess prior exposure or sensitization to perennial allergens. It has been deprecated and should not be confused with standard allergy testing that measures allergen-specific IgE.

How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected, separated into serum, and exposed to selected allergen components. The laboratory uses the RAST detection method to determine whether matching allergen-specific antibodies are present.

How do I prepare for the test?

No special preparation is generally required for a blood draw. Because this is a deprecated test, contact the laboratory before the appointment to confirm that it is still available and which allergens are included.

Reference range

Adult: 10-40 U/LN/A

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a standard RAST allergy test?
No. Standard RAST testing usually measures allergen-specific IgE, while this deprecated label refers to an IgG assay. Confirm the exact analyte with the laboratory or ordering clinician.
Does a positive result mean I am allergic?
Not necessarily. Allergen-specific IgG can indicate exposure or sensitization and does not alone prove that symptoms are caused by an IgE-mediated allergy.
What should I do with the result?
Review it with your clinician, who can interpret it alongside your symptoms, exposure history, and any more current allergy testing.
