What is this test?

This is a qualitative laboratory test that looks for IgG antibodies directed against strawberry proteins. These antibodies can develop after the immune system is exposed to strawberry.

Why might I need this test?

It was historically used to evaluate possible food-related immune reactions. Because this test is deprecated, a clinician may instead recommend allergy testing that more directly assesses allergic sensitization.

How is the test performed?

A laboratory sample is tested for strawberry-specific IgG using a qualitative method, with the result reported as detected or not detected. The RAST designation refers to a radioallergosorbent-type testing approach.

How do I prepare for the test?

No special preparation is usually needed. Follow any instructions from your clinician, and do not stop medications or avoid foods unless your clinician specifically tells you to do so.

Reference range

Adult: 10-40 U/LN/A

Specimen: serum

No special preparation required. Avoid fatty meals before the test if possible.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive strawberry IgG result mean I am allergic to strawberries?
No. Strawberry-specific IgG can occur after ordinary exposure and is not considered reliable evidence of allergy. An allergist may use the result with your symptoms and other appropriate testing.
How is this different from a strawberry IgE test?
IgG and IgE are different antibody classes. IgE is more closely associated with immediate allergic reactions, while IgG often reflects exposure or a non-allergic immune response.
Why is this test considered deprecated?
It is not well supported for diagnosing food allergy and may lead to unnecessary concern or food restriction. Your clinician can recommend more appropriate allergy testing when needed.
