Published: August 9, 2026Updated: August 17, 2026

A blood test that detects IgG antibodies to turkey proteins. It is a legacy test and does not by itself confirm a turkey allergy.

Quick summary

What is this test?

This test looks for turkey-specific IgG antibodies in your blood using a radioallergosorbent test, or RAST. IgG antibodies can develop after exposure to turkey proteins.

Why might I need this test?

It may be used to investigate suspected exposure to turkey or support evaluation of a reported food reaction. Because this is a deprecated test, a clinician may prefer newer, standardized food-specific IgE testing and your medical history.

How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected and tested for antibodies that recognize turkey proteins. The result is reported as positive or negative for detectable turkey-specific IgG.

How do I prepare for the test?

No special preparation is usually required, and you may eat turkey as usual unless your clinician gives different instructions. Tell your clinician about any allergic symptoms, recent turkey exposure, and medicines you take.

Reference range

Adult: 10-40 U/LN/A

Specimen: serum

No special preparation required. Avoid fatty meals before the test if possible.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive turkey IgG result mean I am allergic to turkey?
No. Turkey-specific IgG can occur after exposure without causing an allergy. Your clinician will consider symptoms, timing, and food-specific IgE or other appropriate testing.
Is this the same as a turkey IgE test?
No. This test detects IgG antibodies, while food allergy is generally associated with IgE-mediated sensitization. A turkey-specific IgE test may be more relevant when immediate symptoms suggest an allergy.
Why is the test described as deprecated?
It is a legacy testing method and is no longer routinely recommended for diagnosing food allergy. Newer standardized tests and clinical evaluation are usually preferred.
