Leukocyte Elastase, Plasma — Mass Concentration

Published: August 9, 2026Updated: August 17, 2026

Measures the amount of leukocyte elastase, also called neutrophil elastase, in plasma. It may be used as a marker of neutrophil activation and inflammation.

What is this test?

Leukocyte elastase, also called neutrophil elastase, is an enzyme released by activated white blood cells called neutrophils. This test measures its mass concentration in plasma, the liquid portion of blood.

Why might I need this test?

A clinician may order this test to assess neutrophil activity as part of an evaluation of inflammation or certain immune-related conditions. It is usually interpreted together with symptoms, medical history, and other laboratory results.

How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected, and the plasma is separated and analyzed to determine the amount of leukocyte elastase. The laboratory may use an immunoassay or another validated testing method.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the instructions provided by your clinician or laboratory. No special preparation is commonly required for a routine blood draw, although you should tell the laboratory if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medicines.

Reference range

Adult: 10-40 U/LN/A

Frequently asked questions

Is leukocyte elastase the same as pancreatic elastase?
No. Leukocyte elastase, also called neutrophil elastase, comes from activated neutrophils. Pancreatic elastase is produced in the pancreas and is a different test.
What does a high leukocyte elastase result mean?
It may suggest increased neutrophil activation and is often associated with an inflammatory or immune-related process. The result is not specific to one condition and must be interpreted with other findings.
Does this test require fasting?
Fasting is not generally required unless your clinician or laboratory specifically instructs you to fast. Confirm the preparation instructions before the blood sample is collected.
