What is this test?

This test measures pancreatic elastase in stool. It is commonly known as fecal pancreatic elastase-1 and helps evaluate how well the pancreas is producing digestive enzymes.

Why might I need this test?

The test may be ordered for symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, weight loss, oily or foul-smelling stools, bloating, or poor nutrient absorption. It can help evaluate possible pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, including chronic pancreatitis or other pancreatic disorders.

How is the test performed?

A stool sample is collected and sent to a laboratory, where pancreatic elastase is measured using a laboratory assay. Depending on the laboratory, more than one stool sample may be requested to improve the reliability of the result.

How do I prepare for the test?

This test usually does not require fasting. Collect the stool in the container provided and follow the laboratory's instructions for the number of samples, refrigeration, and delivery timing. Do not add disinfectant, bleach, or toilet water to the sample.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test diagnose chronic pancreatitis?
No. It provides evidence about pancreatic digestive enzyme function but usually must be interpreted alongside symptoms, imaging, and other tests.
Is fasting required for a stool pancreatic elastase test?
Usually not. Follow the specific collection kit instructions, as some laboratories request multiple samples or special handling.
What can cause a low pancreatic elastase result?
Low results may occur when the pancreas produces or releases insufficient digestive enzymes, including with chronic pancreatitis, obstruction, or certain inherited conditions.
