Why This Test Is Done
Your doctor may order this test if you’ve traveled to areas with flavivirus outbreaks, have flu-like symptoms, or suspect an infection. It can also help confirm a diagnosis in cases where other tests are inconclusive or if you’ve had recent exposure.
What to Expect Before the Test
No special preparation is needed. You’ll have a small needle inserted into a vein (usually in your arm) to draw blood. The process takes about 5 minutes. If you’re nervous, let your healthcare provider know—you can use a numbing cream or ask for a smaller needle.
What the Test Results Mean
Positive results for IgG antibodies suggest past infection or immunity, while IgM antibodies indicate recent infection. Both together may confirm exposure. False positives can occur in rare cases, so results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider.
Common Symptoms of Flavivirus Infection
Symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, or rash. Some people have no symptoms at all. If you develop these signs after travel or exposure, see a doctor promptly.
Clinical interpretation
