What is this test?

This test measures IgE antibodies to a mixture of 24 common food allergens in a blood sample. It is often called a food allergen screening panel; the exact foods included may vary by laboratory.

Why might I need this test?

It may be used to investigate reactions after eating, such as hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or other symptoms suspected to be related to food. Your clinician will interpret the panel alongside your history and other allergy testing.

How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected and tested for IgE antibodies against the foods in the panel. RAST is an older term for this type of blood-based allergen antibody testing.

How do I prepare for the test?

Fasting is generally not required. Antihistamines and some other medicines can affect results, so tell your clinician about all medicines and supplements before testing; do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I have a food allergy?
Not necessarily. A positive result shows sensitization to a food, and clinical symptoms are needed to determine whether it represents a true allergy.
Can I stop eating a food because of this test?
Discuss any food restrictions with your clinician before making significant changes. Avoiding foods unnecessarily can affect nutrition and quality of life.
Why does the panel include 24 different foods?
The panel screens broadly for common food triggers when the suspected food is not clear. The specific allergens tested may differ among laboratories, so request the test's food list if needed.
