Why This Test Is Done
Your doctor may order this test if you have symptoms like severe headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, or fever, which could signal a fungal infection in the central nervous system. It’s also used in people with weakened immune systems or those who’ve had recent surgeries or medical procedures that increase infection risk.
What to Expect Before the Test
You’ll likely have a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to collect CSF. This involves lying on your side, having the area cleaned, and a needle inserted into your lower back to draw fluid. You may feel a brief pinch, but it’s usually not painful. Recovery is quick, and you can return to normal activities soon after.
What Happens During the Test
The collected CSF is sent to a lab, where it’s cultured to grow any fungi present. This process can take days to weeks, as fungi grow slowly. Sensitivity testing helps determine the best antifungal treatment.
What the Results Mean
Positive results indicate the presence of fungi in your CSF, which may require immediate antifungal treatment. Negative results mean no fungi were detected, but further testing or monitoring may still be needed depending on your symptoms.
