What is this test?
This blood test measures the amount of cholesterol carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL helps transport cholesterol away from artery walls back to the liver.
Why might I need this test?
HDL cholesterol is usually part of a lipid profile or cholesterol panel. Your clinician may use it along with total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and your medical history to assess cardiovascular risk.
How is the test performed?
A small blood sample is drawn from a vein and analyzed in a laboratory. It is commonly collected at the same time as the other tests in a lipid panel.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is not always required, but follow your clinician’s instructions, especially if you are also having LDL cholesterol or triglycerides measured. Tell your clinician about cholesterol-lowering medicines or supplements you take.
Reference range
Adult males: >40 mg/dL; Females: >50 mg/dLN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
