What is this test?
This blood test measures the concentration of HDL alpha-3 in serum. HDL alpha-3 is a subfraction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the particle that carries cholesterol away from tissues back to the liver.
Why might I need this test?
A clinician may order this test as part of an evaluation of cholesterol metabolism or when other lipid measurements need more detailed interpretation. It is usually considered alongside total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is drawn, and the serum portion is analyzed in the laboratory to determine the concentration of HDL alpha-3. The result is reported as a concentration in the blood.
How do I prepare for the test?
No special preparation is usually required unless your clinician gives different instructions. Because food can affect lipid measurements, tell the laboratory if you ate recently and follow any fasting directions provided.
Reference range
Adult: 44-147 U/LN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
